How To Marie Kondo Your Work Life

How To Marie Kondo Your Work Life

Chances are, you’ve come across Marie Kondo. I mean, she really has been making quite the (tidy) storm. For those that don’t know, she’s created her very own cleaning routine, which has become so successful, that her “KonMari” method has become a verb. Yes, that’s just how successful she is. Iconic.

Her book, ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying up” has inspired me, and many others, to tackle all the clutter in the home. So, what if we used her method on another aspect of our lives which causes stress? Like, say…work?

This might seem a little bit far fetched, but you’ll see exactly what I mean. Here are the top ways that you can KonMari your career.

Remove the non-essentials

In the home, this would mean taking out all those little bit and bobs which serve us no use. In our work life, this means saying ‘no’ a little more often.

Obviously, this doesn’t exactly mean that you should turn down great opportunities.

Rather, you should learn that you can’t do everything. If something will just pile on the stress, allow that voice in your head begging you to say “no” to come out.

Does it spark joy?

This has become something of an iconic line for Marie Kondo. Usually, she’ll hold up some old painting that was found at a flea market, and the answer is very obvious. However, with work it’s a little bit different.

At this point, you’ll have to decide if what you’re doing every single day is sparking your joy. For example, going for coffee with that one super negative co-worker.

This could also raise a bigger question about whether your job as a whole is igniting joy in your life.

Be free from work…

Marie Kondo emphasises being free from your possessions. Well, taking a break from your work email, and work in general can be really beneficial.

Not only to your mental state. Sometimes, taking time out can be really great for your overall productiveness. Think of it as a reset button.

Streamline everything

Things won’t always run smoothly, that’s a fact. However, taking steps to make sure that do can make everything a little bit more streamlined.

Things like making to-do lists, setting a schedule and organising everything can make a big difference. Sometimes, we’re so caught up in the hectic happenings of one day, we let it slip into the next day and it creates a vicious cycle.

Learn to let go

The fact is, there will always be the not-so-fun aspects of work, it’s (sadly) inevitable. This could be the admin, the meetings, late nights, but it shouldn’t encapsulate every part of your work life.

You should learn to let go of situations that aren’t making your happy, pushing you, or driving from your passion. The fact is, nobody wants an unhappy employee – there may be something that your manager can do to help you.

To put it bluntly, if there isn’t, perhaps it’s time to move on.

Getting rid of the mess

This is where you fully take in everything Marie Kondo speaks about. Walk into your office or work space, tidy up your desk, move all the clutter from around you and, please, sort out your inbox.

You will feel so much better.

Well, there they were – the Marie Kondo inspired steps you can take to improve your work life. Do you have any tips for less stress that you can share?
