Feeling Stressed? Here Are Some Tips to De-Stress

Stress is one of the worst things an individual can experience. Not only does it interrupt your life, but it can also lead to anxiety, depression and mental illness. Suffering from a mental illness can often make you feel as if you have no control over life, but there are things you can do.

Balancing work with our personal lives can be difficult, but if you learn how to de-stress, you can enjoy life and save yourself some heartache along the way. Here are some great tips to reduce stress.

Pet Therapy

There’s nothing like spending some time with your furry friends. Animals have a sixth sense, and when bonded to their owners, they can feel when you’re upset. Our pets depend on our care, but don’t think they won’t be there for you either! Take your dog for a walk, engage in some playtime or lie down and let your pet snuggle up to you. Soon you’ll find the stress melting away.

Take a Holiday

Are your holiday days building up? Some women see not taking many days off a year as an achievement, but why? We all need some time for ourselves, and that’s nothing to be ashamed of. Book yourself that holiday, or go away on a weekend city break. With so many great deals around, you can find a city break without blowing your budget.

If you don’t want to go on holiday, take a day for yourself and enjoy relaxing. Catch up with friends, or spend the day binge-watching Netflix shows. Sometimes all we need is some time to ourselves to de-stress.

Get Some Exercise

We all know how difficult it is to keep motivated. After a long day at work, the last thing anyone wants to do is hit the gym. However, exercise is one of the best ways to a stress-free life. According to the American Psychological Association, twenty minutes a day can lift your mood and the feeling lasts for hours. Something as simple as taking a walk will make a difference so don’t worry about sweating through a spinning class. Small steps lead to big changes!

Let Go Of Negativity

We deal with negativity every day, but when we do it to ourselves, that’s the worst thing. Spending your days worrying about what others think can cause stress which leads to depression. Do your co-workers like you? Is your boss impressed with your work? Are you measuring up against others? The endless thoughts can leave you swimming in a sea of negativity.

The best way to deal with negative thoughts is to accept them, but don’t let them hold you back. Every normal human being worries they’re not good enough, so you’re not alone. Write a list of your positive aspects and give yourself a break. If your boss has a problem, they’ll let you know.

Not Feeling It? Leave It!

A hard week at work leaves most people feeling drained, but we often feel we have to maintain our social calendar. Dinner with friends, the kid’s football game and that party you’re dreading are avoidable. However, most people carry out their obligations then feel like they’ve wasted a whole weekend.

You need to remember that you don’t have to do anything. It’s OK to skip a social engagement and take some time for yourself. We all need a rest sometimes and your friends will understand. If you feel your calendars always full its time to make some space for yourself.

Take a Shortcut!

Healthy eating is everywhere, and for good reason. Our diet choices impact both our mental and physical health, but getting your 5-a-day isn’t always easy. One of the greatest modern day inventions is the meal-kit. These genius kits enable people to cook healthy home-cooked meals with minimal stress. Each kit comes with prepared ingredients and a list of instructions. Even better, you can choose your meals by preparation time. It’s a great activity for the family and there are plenty of meal kits to choose from.

Leave The News

People see watching the evening news as their obligation to society, but it can be distressing. If you’re feeling current events are getting to you, then take a break from the news and watch something you enjoy. Netflix has dozens of TV shows and movies this summer, so give yourself a break.

Take Up a Hobby

Remember when your gran used to knit? Surprisingly, knitting is the new thing and there are websites dedicated to the hobby. Why is knitting so popular? It provides us with a fantastic way to relax and be creative.

Not everyone enjoys knitting, but there are plenty of great hobbies around. Take up scrapbooking, bake cookies or get your gardening gloves out.

Re-Connect

Loneliness is unavoidable, but are you trying to combat yours? Sometimes, despite being surrounded by people, we can still feel all alone in the world. Not seeing your friends for a long time, or missing date nights with your other half can cause lonely feelings.

Depression, anxiety, and agitation are symptoms of loneliness, so it’s best to find ways to meet others and socialise. If you’re new to an area, join a club or MeetUp group to connect with like-minded people. Even joining an online forum can help combat your loneliness, as it makes you feel like part of something. Remember, we’re all human beings and social interaction is central to our survival.  

Take a Bath

Ahh, there’s nothing like a hot bath after a long day to wash the stress away. Light some candles, put on your favourite Enya CD and tell yourself that tomorrow is a new day. Experts say Epsom Salts are best for stress, so stay away from the bubble bath.

If you’re lucky, then you might have access to a spa bath or a jacuzzi. The bubbles are incredibly relaxing, so if you don’t have one it might be time to hit your local health centre.
